The Beginner

Always
I want to be
the beginner
learning

Always
I love to be
the novice
finding out

Here is where the excitement
the innovation lies
Here is where the unknown
magnifies the pleasure

Always
I aim to be
the student
of a new situation

Always
I long to be
the protege
of fate’s master

Here is where the blankness
is like a bright summer’s day
Here is where the silence
is inspiration in itself

Always
I want to know more
deeper insight into everything
growing

Always
I aim to be
expanding
my understanding

Always
I want to be
the beginner…

[2016]

    1. Thanks Benjamin. I also quite enjoy being the expert or the teacher… but selfishly, the excitement of discovery is where my heart truly lies. 🙂 Thanks for your comment, as always.

    1. Thank you! 🙂 I had tossed this one away for some reason but, coming back to it a few years later, I was pleasantly surprised. Re-discovery as wonderful as discover itself, perhaps? 😀🙏🏼

      1. Well, I’m glad it was re-discovered Tom. I am a life long learner and feel very much like a novice in my writing at times. So reading your words today, just helped me reframe how I see my poetry. Perhaps it’s my joy to be discovering how much I don’t know and how much I can improve 🙂

      2. That’s so rewarding to hear. There have been many times when a poem or piece of writing has come along at just the right moment to help me when I’m stuck or lost. I think striving to always be learning and growing is a great thing to do 🙏 Good luck 😊x

      3. Tom, I have a favour (of sorts). Do you mind if I mention your piece on my blog? I have been nominated for a blogging award and instead of answering the questions, I write a letter. I’d like to use this piece to encourage others. Is that ok?
